Having worked with gifted learners and their families for many years, I am passionate about enhancing and supporting the growth and development of gifted children of all ages and diverse backgrounds through education and advocacy.
According to the National Association of Gifted Children (NACG), "Academically gifted and talented students in this country make up approximately six to ten percent of the total student population (three to five million students). These students differ from typical students in terms of learning style, depth and complexity of understanding, and potential. " This difference means that the education program for gifted students should be modified to meet their needs.
However, many of these high-ability students are not being identified and/or are not receiving the services they need, especially children from low-income and minority backgrounds . Consequently, many risk failure to reach the high levels of achievement of which they are capable. This is a disservice to each of them and to our country.
It is my belief that teachers, parents, administrators, and legislators must unite to learn more about gifted and talented students and how we can best meet their needs. We must support and advocate for for these highly capable learners who have demonstrated abilities that require differentiated programming to reach their potential.
